How to Install Iron Or Metal Balusters in Wood Handrails

As promised I am putting forward information on the installation of iron balusters. During the day, one of the most common questions I get from customers is the how to of iron baluster installation.

Bed Frame Rails

Many building codes require three balusters on a tread to comply with the 4" sphere rule. Check with your local code officials if you have any doubts about your stair's compliance.

Bed Frame Rails

First, I let the customer know that the very last thing in balustrade installation is the iron balusters. It simply works well to install the newel posts, handrail, treads and risers first. Once installed layout the balusters on the floor and use a level to plumb up to the handrail center and mark the connection at the center bottom of the handrail. Using a ½" paddle or spade bit one can drill upward 1" deep into the handrail. Using a 5/8" paddle bit drill a hole no more than ¼" deep into the floor. Once these are drilled out the bottom of the handrail can be sanded with an orbital sander and the complete balustrade system can be stained and finished. Once the stain and finish is completed one can begin installing the iron balusters.

One of the following two tools is recommended for cutting iron or metal balusters: a power miter box with a metal cutting blade, or a portable band saw. My preference is the portable band saw. It works cleaner, is more portable, and doesn't cause sparking as does the power miter box (or chop saw).

Turn the baluster upside down and set the round dowel top into the hole in the floor, holding the baluster plumb to the hole under the handrail. Mark the baluster with a pencil, measure up 3/8" minimum and that would be the cut mark. Note that you are cutting off the bottom, not the top, of the baluster. This ensures proper alignment of the design elements.

For gluing the installer has two options: Epoxy or construction adhesive. My personal preference is construction adhesive as I have more control over the product and, if it gets messy, wipes away easily and can also serve as a caulk around the iron. Epoxy comes in the mixing tubes and doesn't always mix properly. If it gets messy and dried, removing the epoxy also removes the powder coating on the iron. Some carpenters prefer and have their own control over epoxy. I do not. I find construction adhesives easier to work with.

Squeeze a small amount of the adhesive into the hole under the handrail. The adhesive is thick and slow and will not drain back out, giving time to complete the installation. Make sure the shoe for the iron baluster is slid up while installing. Push baluster's round dowel up into the ½" hole under the handrail and then drop it into the 5/8" hole in the floor in a bed of additional construction adhesive. Square off the baluster's alignment then drop the shoe down to the floor. If the shoe comes with a set screw, use an Allen wrench to tighten it. The glue in the handrail hole will settle around the baluster creating a perfect seal. Once the glue has dried the baluster will be well secured, even helping to strengthen the handrails load.

When installing 5/8" iron balusters the process is identical, one only needs to drill a 5/8" hole under the handrail and a ¾" hole at the floor. 5/8" iron is ideal in remodeling work, when replacing wood balusters. Most installed wood balusters have a 5/8" hole under the handrail and a ¾" hole at the floor. If replacing wood balusters with ½" iron it is usually recommended to install shoes under the handrail to cover a small square peg in a larger round hole. The use of wood or cabinet screws helps to lock the baluster in, serving as both a wedge and forcing the baluster on center.

Round 5/8" iron or metal balusters can be installed without shoes simply by drilling a 5/8" hole into the handrail and into the floor and following the same procedure outlined above.

I have been asked about making the holes square. It is possible with a little more work. To cut the square hole in the floor or handrail, drill a round hole in the wood the same size at the baluster's overall width. Then chisel out the hole to make it square. Another option is a "mortising bit." I have not used one of these but have spoken with carpenters who have. Their comment tends to be that this method is a "pain in the you know what."

    Wall Wine Cabinet

Build Your Own Bar Stool (In An Afternoon)

Bar stools are as important as the best wine in your bar. It is said that if you don't get a good stool to sit on, you won't enjoy the drink. By a good seat it means that not only it should be comfortable it should be attractive too besides having other minor and major specifications. Nowadays, there are lots and lots of options available, may be the number match to that of the number of the brands of beer available in the whole world. But the irony is that not many match all the required specifications. The options available in the material that we can use are metal, wood, bamboo, iron, etc. The styles available are retro, swivel, whether it has back or not, different metal colors, different designer fabrics, whether it is meant for indoors or outdoors and so on and so forth. We as the owner of our bar, we are the best judge of our bar and hence we are the only one who can decide, which is the best for ourselves. At times we want to make our own bar stools to cater our need. Here are some tips to make one yourself.

    Bed Frame Rails

First of all you have to decide between the material and that in turn will also decide about the portability. Obviously the wood ones offer easy portability. Similarly if you think that children would be using that too often then bamboo ones would be better. You might also want to consider wood ones in that case. If you are an art lover and want to have some carvings and designs, then we would recommend you wood ones. If your house is of ethnic style then it is the wrought iron that will suit your need the most.

    Bed Frame Rails

Then we think the height is the most important that you should consider. Although people have their own standards but it all depends on the height of the counter. Remember that calculating wrong seat heights is one of the most important reasons why people are unsatisfied with their stools. You should leave anywhere between 9 to 13 inches from the top of the seat to the counter.

The next is the style and color. If you want to choose from the innumerable designs or you want to give stress on comfort or you want something to write on the back then the swivel is the best for you. You can carve anything from the name of the basketball team you support to your wife's name. The color-coding will depend on the amount of light available in the bar and the color of your walls although black can suit every background.

Now let us talk about blend. The best among the blend is the wood and the metal. In this category some people make a metal frame with a wooden seat. In some others, the metal seat on the metal frame is carved and painted in such a way that it gives an impression of wooden seat, which means a durability of, wooden with a visual picture of wood.

Bathroom Renovation - A Step by Step Guide

Bathrooms are one of the smallest rooms in the house and they are also one the most costly to renovate. Bathroom renovation is a job that, if done well, can add value to a home and a great space full of design and light.

    Bed Frame Rails

    Bathroom design

    Bed Frame Rails

Bathroom design is the first area of your bathroom renovation you need to get right. Just replacing the existing bathroom with the same design may not be enough. The key to great bathroom design is to design it with the people that are going to use it in mind. However be sure that your bathroom design also has a general use factor as well. For example: If you were designing a bathroom for families you could still design the bathroom with easy access to the shower and bath. This would ensure that the design would also work for people with limited mobility. This means if you decide to sell your home or if you are renovating for profit your design has a wider market appeal. Great bathroom design also uses the space well, taking into account the light or window space, size of fittings, and drainage options. Draw out a plan to scale and right down the sizes of your room. Mark the existing drainage points and then and water inlet points. Write down a wish list of the bathroom fittings to need and want with their sizes. Now marry the two together and see what fits. Note: Most bathroom drainage and water inlet points can be moved but this does come at extra cost.

    Bathroom remodel

If you have decided to do the work yourself or part of the work it is time to hire a skip bin and pull out the old bathroom. If your home was made pre 1980 you may have fibro bathroom wall linings with asbestos in it and great care will need to be taken. You will need some full body disposable overalls, eye protection, and quality dust mask. Check with your local building authority or council regarding the regulation on bathroom asbestos wall lining removal.

Remove everything except the plumbing. If you keep the bathroom plumbing in place you will not have to turn the water off for the whole house. Also you will need to jack hammer the floor tiles up and the sand and cement bed that they are laid on.

    Bathroom Renovation and construction

Bathrooms must be construction properly from the ground up to ensure that the finished job is correct and true. This also ensures the design and look of the bathroom will have a great finish

    The Bathroom Renovation Process

Install water and drainage pipe and electrical wires. Install wall lining and ceiling and then install the bath hob and bath. Waterproof the floor and shower and bath recess. Correct the fall of the floor with sand and cement ready for tiling. Lay floor and wall tiles and then grout. Install new bathroom vanity, fittings, and taps - install new electrical. Paint ceiling and final clean.Step one - Plumbing and electrical

At this point all new plumbing is installed for clean hot and cold water and drainage. Careful attention needs to be taken when positioning the new plumbing so that the plumbing fittings are correct when the tiling is finished. For example: To centre a fitting in a shower recess you must take into consideration the thickness of the wall board, tile glue and tile so the fitting will be centred after the tiles are in place. The same applies to installing drainage pipes for a toilet; the wall lining and tile thickness must be taken into account so the pipe is in the correct position when the toilet is installed after tiling. Also rough in the any new electrical wires without connecting them to the mains power.

Step two - Install wall and ceiling linings

Install your 6mm wall lining being careful to nail the fibro board every 150mm without nailing into the new pipes and electrical wires. The best way is to measure and mark the pipe and wire layout onto your new wall board with a pencil as you go. Screw up (or nail) the ceiling lining, plasterboard is the most common. However if you are laying your tiles from floor to ceiling do not install the cornice as this is best done after tiling. If you are not tiling to the ceiling go ahead and install the cornice after the wallboard and ceiling lining have been installed. Also if your bath is not freestanding you can now make up the frame and install the bath. Ensure the bath is installed correctly allowing for the thickness of the tiles and glue.Be sure to check all linings and pipes before you continue with your bathroom renovation.

Step three - Waterproof your bathroom

Waterproof your bathroom floor, shower recess, and around the bath. When waterproofing the floor ensure that the waterproofing comes 100mm up the walls. The shower recess will need to be waterproofed 100mm above the shower rose outlet. Also the bath should be waterproofed 100mm above the lip of the bath right around and to the floor. At the doorway install a 25 x 25mm aluminum angle glued into place with quality silicone and waterproof into the lip. Your whole bathroom should now the tanked, so the all water will only go down a drain. Bathroom waterproofing tip: waterproofing is an easy job but quality and accuracy is most important.

Step four - Lay in the cement screed for the floor.

Before the floor tiles can laid the floor must be smooth and fairly flat with a slight fall to the drainage outlet. To do this you must use sand and cement mix and it is best to add a waterproofing agent into this as well. With a level, set the floor level at the doorway. Use the top aluminum angle as the finished floor level and measure down the thickness of the tile plus 10mm for the glue. Mark right around the bathroom with a level and then screed in your sand and cement mix with a 1 to 3 degree fall to the top of the drain outlet. Take your time and get it right with the finished level as smooth as possible. When the sand cement mix has set but is not dry (you can walk on it but you it is still a bit soft) rub it over with a house brick. This will remove all the small highs and lows and check with a level as you go. Let the bathroom floor fully dry and then you should have a great surface to tile onto. Tip: the more work you put into the floor screed the easier your tiling will be.

Step five: Tile floor and walls

Lay your tiles on the floor first and then grout. Then lay your wall tiles making sure that they are level as you lay. Once the bathroom tiles have been cut and laid, grout all your tiles and then buff the tiles clean.

Step six: Install plumbing fitting and fixtures

Install all your plumbing fittings and taps. Also fit all your towel rails and soap holders. Fit your new bathroom vanity making sure it is level and sealed around the top with silicone and also seal around the bath. Tip: make sure they are in the right place before you drill into your tiles.

Step seven: painting, and cleaning - enjoy

Paint your ceiling and do a final clean making sure everything is fitted correctly and that there are no leaks in your plumbing. - Enjoy your new bathroom.

Know How to Make Wooden Bed Frames For Crafting Wooden Beds

It is easy to make wooden beds if you know how. You need a right plan and proper execution of the plan to make your wooden bed a successful project. The important thing to take care of is to build the wooden bed frame. Unless, you build the frame you would not know how to complete the look of the bed.

    Bed Frame Rails

How to make the wooden frame of the bed?

    Bed Frame Rails

First, make a frame that will add to the appeal of your bedroom. Remember, it has to be of wood and therefore no metal block will compliment the pure wooden structure. First you need to make a frame that can be modified and planned into a structure that you want. But to make the plan go well, you have to know how to go about it.

A wooden bed adds to the show of your room. But wood has to be etched in the right proportion so as to ensure that you do not have to cut through the wood once again for better look. If you follow few procedures then you will know how to make the wooden bed that has a different show which can hardly match the look of the other materials, which may look good but does nor exude as much sophistication as wood.

Prefer to use the lag bolts in place of bedrail hangers. The lag bolts help to tighten the edges of the bed so that that the wood structure looks complete. If you see that the woods are fitting into places precisely, then cut the wood to place them in proper shapes. This will enable to make the wooden pieces look and seat tightly and the give the bed a complete look.

Make sure that the bedrail hangers are tightly secured with the head post and also the side rail. The screwing should be done tightly since that will ensure how well the project will be completed. The support block has to be attached to the foot rail and also the head rail. For this you need to cut a groove in it.

Now the post has to be attached to the rail. This is done by using the bedrail hanger. Once you are done with this, the support beam has to be placed tightly between the support blocks. Once, this is done place the plywood on the support beam and see how it rests exactly. Remember, the beds made out of wood exude the most sophisticated look and adds to the elegance of the room. It shows your taste for good things and how it will make your room look more beautiful

Hence, when you know how to make the bed frames it will be easy for you to complete the look of the bed made out of wood.

Wooden Bench Making in 6 Easy Steps

Although you may think it is really more difficult than it really is, bench making can be done in 6 simple steps. After we have gathered the needed materials and tools we can do bench making in no time. We can make ourselves a nice, simple and safe wooden bench; one that will be both functional and beautiful and something you will be sure to get compliments on and a great conversation piece. After all, what's better than saying, Yeah, I made that!"

    Bed Frame Rails

Bench making is easier with these six steps.

    Bed Frame Rails

    1. First, we start off by measuring the frame of the bench seat to our desired dimensions, cut them, and then tack-nail them together. Bench making includes drawing a curve line on the side pieces lengthways and cutting them using a jigsaw before attaching them together. This forms the seat shape. We may also form it as we see fit.

Then cut and sand the seat slats and mark their face boards. Screw the seat frame tightly together. Glue and nail the slats to the frame, beginning from the back. A ¾ inch vertical spacer will help. A good bench making design is providing a slight slat overhang on the front.

    2. Second, we come to the screwing portion of bench making. Glue and screw front legs to our seat frame by first pre-drilling and applying countersink holes for screws to fit in. Do the same with the hind legs.

    3. Third is sanding. Bench making is also about safety so we round sharp corners and sand the seat face and legs to smoothen all surfaces. This avoids board grains or fibers from sticking out and hurting the user. Sanding also creates better-looking seat surfaces.

    4. Fourth, we deal with the back rest in bench making. Get the top rail measurement and add a space 5/8 inch from the rail top to the back part of the hind leg. This should give a 1/8 inch space at the bottom of the rail between the back part of the leg and the rail.

Then place the router tenons or tongues and vertical back slats on one end. There should be a fitting groove at the top rail. The tongues should easily fit into the groove. Glue the slats and nail them.

    5. Fifth, bench making with armrests requires putting wood cleats 3 1/2 by 3/4 by 3'4 inches to support the front legs. Make a 3/16 inch hole with a drill at the midpoint of the cleat and have it attached through the bracing at the corner.

The armrest should measure from the back of the hind leg to some inches off the front leg. An armrest notch should receive the leg support of the back rest. Drill a hole and countersink atop the front cleat piercing the armrest then glue and screw.

    6. Then, sixth is final sanding. Bench making should end with all surfaces, ends, and corners smoothen before painting. There we have our nice, simple, and sturdy bench.

Do-It-Yourself Energy Efficiency Projects - Your Home's Thermal Envelope (Part 1)

Because of the price and use of energy, architects and builders now design a home to be a "thermal envelope". That is the sum total of the home's insulation systems including walls, ceilings, foundation, floors, windows, and doors. These work more effectively with good, tight fits that seal out the weather and air. By having a tight seal on your home's thermal envelope, the less energy you waste or lose by exchanging it too often with the air outside.

    Bed Frame Rails

So, with this in mind, let's start at ground level and work our way up to seal your house.

    Bed Frame Rails

    Moisture Barrier

A moisture barrier (usually plastic sheeting) covers the earth beneath a structure to prevent moisture from infiltrating the structure from the ground. All-wooden structures last years longer if they are kept dry and out of contact with the ground. For a house, not only does it help prevent rot but it also helps keep the drier. Because moisture in the air holds heat, even during the most humid months, a moisture barrier will make your Texas home feel drier and cooler.

Most Texas homes are built on either a slab or have crawl spaces under them. Houses with slab foundations typically have concrete poured on top of a plastic moisture barrier. This limits the infiltration of moisture into the thermal envelope of the house. Homes with crawl spaces, meanwhile, feature a moisture barrier in their crawl spaces. Some older homes do not have one and these can be installed by the home owner very easily.

A moisture barrier is plastic sheeting, usually about 6-8 mils thick and is available at any hardware store, typically in sizes ranging from 25 × 25 feet to 100 × 100 feet. It also need not be one single piece of plastic. As long as the sheets overlap each other by about 6 inches or so, it will be effective.

To install, you will need to know the dimensions of your crawl space and buy enough plastic sheeting to cover the ground in that space. Simply cut the plastic sheeting to cover the earth from wall to wall, laying it flat. You can use either black or clear plastic, but I would use clear because black plastic would make your crawl space feel like a cramped version of Batman's lair.

You should notice the difference within 24 hours. If your house feels too dry, simply fold back some of the plastic sheeting to expose the earth underneath. Continue adjusting until your home feels the most comfortable to you.

As mentioned, moisture barriers limit the infiltration of moisture into the thermal envelope of the house. The house feels drier: It will be easier to cool in the summer and less likely to develop mold or contribute to wood rot in the winter.

    Mudsill and Rim Joists

The next place to check out is the mudsill. The mudsill is the board that is bolted flat on to the top of the foundation wall. An example of one is a 2×8 board bolted onto the final course of cement blocks. It provides a bed to attach the flooring joists and banding boards for the first floor of the house. Depending on how well it is installed, it can let in a lot of cold air and moisture.

Places to look for gaps is where the mudsill is fastened to the foundation. A common building practice now is to put down a plastic foam gasket over the foundation before attaching the pressure treated lumber that will be the mudsill. In older homes, either a paper-backed cellulose material was put down or nothing was used. To find gaps, get as close as possible to the mudsill from the inside and look for daylight shining through between the mudsill and the foundation wall and feel for a draft of cool air.

If your foundation is made of cement blocks, look for the vertical joints between the blocks. When these blocks are put into place, the mortar between the blocks often slumps leaving thin mortar or none at all. Over time as the house settles, holes can appear. While these might be small holes that let through tiny amounts of air, if your home has 10 or 20 of them, you're letting in a lot of weather and insects. Seal every hole you find with silicon caulk or expanding foam.

Another place along the mudsill to look for is where the rim joists attach. The rim joist (sometimes called "banding joist") is the piece of wood that closes off the end of the flooring joist or is the last floor joist underneath the exterior wall. The bottom edge is not necessarily an air-tight seal. In fact, I lived in one older house where there was a half-inch gap between the rim joist and mudsill. Now, while this seems small, the gap ran for the entire length of the house: 25 feet. It was the equivalent of leaving a 24 inch by 24 inch window open all the time. Some expandable foam quickly sealed this gap and there was a noticeable improvement in comfort and cost right away.

    Windows

If you have double-hung wooden sash windows with storm windows that are drafty, there are several ways to make them more energy efficient.

Make sure the glazing on the glass panes of the sash windows is not cracked or crumbling. The glazing helps hold and seal the glass to the wooden window and thus blocks drafts and quiets rattling - especially from traffic. It also lessens the likelihood that the glass will break if a pet or a child presses against it. Glazing is something of a skilled art. That being said, it's not that hard to do. Re-glazing a window yourself can save you to 0 or more. All you need is glazing putty (), a putty knife (), some glaziers' points ( for a box of 100) and some time.

First, remove any old, cracked, or crumbling glazing with a putty knife. Glazing putty dries to be very, very hard and will last decades. It can be loosened with a heat gun, but keep the gun moving or the heat will crack the glass.

When the old putty has been removed, remove all the old glaziers' points. Now, lift out the pane and set it aside. Sand the channel where the pane fits on the wooden sash. Usually, I apply a thin bead of silicone caulk in this channel before replacing the glass. This helps to seat and seal the glass pane. This especially helps when working on multiple small panes (called "lights") separated by thin or fragile wooden mullions (also called "muntins"). Next, insert new glaziers points. This is done by using the putty knife to press points into the wooden sash along the glass pane to keep it in place. Take your time so that you don't break the glass.

Glazing putty can be purchased in either a can or a tube with a shaped tip that fits in a caulking gun. However, it does take some practice to get just the right angle and right amount of putty on the glass. When using the tube mix, keep the 45 degree angled tip steadily against the glass and lay a bead of putty the length of bottom of the pane. If you're using the putty from the can, roll the putty into long snake (or rope) and place it along the edge of the pane and along the wood. Gently press it into position so that it forms a nice 45 degree angle with the putty knife. The putty is shaped this way so that water runs off the glass to the edge of the window sash instead of into the window pane channel where it can rot the wood. The next thing to look for is if your windows close snugly. Both the top and bottom window have what is called a "meeting rail". On the upper window, it is the bottom of the window and on the bottom window it is the top. These meeting rails are shaped so that they mesh together when they close. This helps seat and seal the window properly. Check to see if the bottom window runs firmly - but not tightly - along the window jamb as you close the window. If it's too loose and wiggles back and forth, it probably won't seat very tightly when it's closed. You can use a putty knife to pry out the window jambs and then re-position them to improve how tightly the window will close. You might try adding felt or self-adhesive foam weather stripping. Also make sure you clean out any debris from the window to ensure the window will seat and seal snugly.

As metal storm windows age, the harder they seem to close. This usually happens because of dirt and corrosion. Make sure the window tracks are clean and free of dirt and debris so the window runs smoothly. Outside, check that the storm window frame is held tightly in place against the wooden window frame. Screws that hold this frame in place might be loose and might need to be replaced or moved to a new spot. Most drafts from storms windows come from where the storm window frame meets the wooden window frame. Once you're certain the storm window frame is secure, lay a bead of caulk into the seam where the metal storm window frame meets the wooden window frame. Typically, there are two slots cut into the bottom apron of the storm window frame. Do not seal these. These are weep holes that allow condensation to escape.

If you have modern, double glazed windows (windows with two panes of glass), one of the things to look out for is fogging between the panes. Double glazed windows are made by attaching a pane of glass with adhesive to either side of a half-inch wide aluminum frame either in a vacuum or a very dry environment. It is then a single unit and is installed into a standardized window frame. Fogging is a sign that the seal on the window unit has failed and water vapor has penetrated into the space between the panes. If the fogging is still present in summer, it's a good guess that acids have also leeched in with the water vapor and have permanently etched the window glass. If the fogging disappears when the window warms, then it's not too late to treat it. Examine the wood of the window for any discoloration from moisture. Look for peeling, flaking paint or soft, gray-colored wood. If you find some, sand it smooth and then seal it with an oil-based enamel or polyurethane. If the wood is very soft, you might try using an epoxy formulated to penetrate and preserve rotten wood. Be sure to mask the glass first with painter's tape.

A builder installs a door or window with wedges called shims so that the window can float inside a rough opening in the framing. While this lets the door or window open and close freely as it expands and contracts during the year, it also means a lot of outside air can infiltrate your house by getting in around the window frame if it has not been insulated or if it has been damaged. During the summer, it usually isn't a noticeable problem. During the winter, though, if you see moisture or mildew there could be a problem with the window frame.

Look outside for damage to the siding and window frame. Look for holes or wet, rotten wood, or even a loose piece of siding. It's important to clean and seal problems like these quickly, especially if moisture has been getting inside your wall, because the damage will just worsen over time. Rotten or damaged siding can be replaced easily with new pieces from the hardware store. Rotten or damaged window sills should be completely removed and replaced and the inside of the wall inspected for mold, rot, and other damage. However, this is no small job and requires time and skills to complete. It might need the hand of a professional. For an immediate, short-term fix, clean out the rotten wood as best you can and fill the hole with fiberglass auto body putty. This will provide a hard, waterproof barrier against the weather. Be sure to contour and shape it so that it will not interfere with opening and closing the window.

If moisture or rain is getting into your window frame, check to see if any of your rain gutters run over head. Check to see if these are clogged. Also, consider installing drip edging along the top of your windows to help run water around and away from the windows and siding when it rains. After you've installed it, be sure to caulk it in place so moisture can't penetrate behind it.

A lot of folks consider it hideous to put over your windows but it will keep the wind out: clear plastic sheeting. This is probably the easiest temporary energy fix owners of older homes use to keep cold, damp winter weather out. There are two approaches: Apply the clear plastic sheeting to the outside of the window by stapling it to the wood window frame and then nailing lathe over the stapled edge to secure the plastic. Or apply the plastic sheeting to double-sided tape on the inside of the window frame (usually available in kits from the home center). To be sure, neither is an attractive solution. However, if you have an older home with double-hung windows in poor condition, this short-term fix does a lot for only and about 15 minutes of work. In fact, even if your windows close snugly, it might not be a bad idea for a north-facing window that doesn't have much of a view.

Energy Efficient Window Treatments: "It's Curtains for You!"

Curtains not only add style, color, and privacy to a room, they also act as an insulating blanket for one of the most thermally conductive parts of the house: the windows. Curtains are even more effective at sealing off a window when they have thermal backing. Thermal backing is usually foam because foam permits water vapor to move through the fabric rather than condensing on the cold side toward the window and causing moisture problems. An additional benefit to thermal curtains is that they help deaden noise from outside that is normally transmitted into the room by the window glass. In the summer, the curtains also block hot sun.

Thermal curtains can be made even more efficient by adding a valance with a top. Usually, window valances conceal the curtain hardware such as the rods and brackets. However, if the valance has a top cover, warm air that would normally circulate down between the cool glass and the back of the curtain is blocked. Valances can be made with plywood and then stained, painted, or covered in fabric. Another option is a window quilt. These are blanket-like shade that roll down to cover the window. Some are held tightly in place by magnetic strips attached to both the quilt and the window frame.

Finally, one last accessory for the double hung window is the Window Worm. This is a fabric tube about 2 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter and is as long as a window is wide. It is stuffed with quilting foam or cloth scraps and laid along where the top and bottom window sashes meet to help keep out drafts. Longer ones weighted with sand can also be made and placed across the foot of doors.

Car Beds For Kids - Top Tips to Help You Decide Which Bed For Your Child

Car beds for kids are a perfect choice for your little racer's vivid imagination. Both boys and girls will feel like champions in their first big kids bed.

    Bed Frame Rails

When the time comes to transition your child from his crib to his own bed, most parents are quite ready. But the child might not be. The child is accustomed to sleeping in his cozy crib and the thought of sleeping in such a large bed might be daunting. Your child might be afraid of falling out since he will not longer be surrounded by guard rails as in the crib. Or, if the crib will be passed down to a younger sibling, he might not like the idea of sharing his crib. A savvy parent can help with the transition by making the new bed fun and exciting.

    Bed Frame Rails

Car beds for kids come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. A popular choice is a model that looks like Lightning McQueen, who is a beloved character from the movie, "Cars" or a model that looks like the Batmobile, which is the cool car that Batman drives. Since car beds appeal not only to boys, you can find them in "boy colors" such as blue and black, to car beds for girls that come in colors such as pink and yellow. After all, girls nowadays also dream about being a champion NASCAR racer too.

For added safety, you can find bed rails that are compatible with your child's race car bed. Many manufacturers go the extra mile and customize the bed rails so that they blend seamlessly with the race car frame. The streamlined silhouette of a race car is a plus because this means no sharp edges, only rounded sides that will not hurt your child.

You child may be so excited about his new bed that he might spend many daylight hours playing and pretending in it. This is a definite fringe benefit, get a safe and sturdy bed for your child and he delights in playing with his new toy, the very same object.

Waterbed Drain - How to Drain a Waterbed

Waterbed drains and pumps are now available to make the job of filling and draining your bed much easier. Water beds offer much better body support than regular mattresses, but are usually much less convenient to deal with, especially regarding setting it up or transferring it to a new location.

    Bed Frame Rails

This is especially true for hard side beds, which are water mattresses placed inside a strong wooden surround for support. This type of bed requires special bed frames if you wish to use one, although they can also stand on their own. The wooden support also usually makes the whole setup quite unwieldy to transport and move around. This hard side design is the original one, used originally for medical purposes, with patients who require good body support as well as those who are bedridden.

    Bed Frame Rails

Easier to deal with is the soft side water bed type. Soft side mattresses have foam edgings instead of using a wooden surround for support. These foam sidings provide just as much support, and can still allow the soft side bed to stand on its own. A newer version of the soft side mattress is even easier to fit into existing bed frames: the foam edging has been divided into two, a lower fixed part and a top hinged foam rail.

To fill or drain a new waterbed, a fill and drain kit is usually required. This kit is often provided with the bed itself, and if not, they are readily available at furniture and home furnishing stores. One thing to remember is to turn off and unplug the heater before filling (or draining) the mattress. Then connect your bed's valve with the faucet using a garden hose (flush it out if it's been stored outside) and the faucet connector usually provided with the bed. A waterbed hose connector is attached to the end of the garden hose that goes into the valve.

Use towels to wrap around possible leakage areas and prevent any spills. When filling your bed, pour the waterbed conditioner in first before filling it with mildly warm water, about a quarter or half inch from the top of the bed supports. After shutting the water off and removing the hose, remove any air bubbles from inside the mattress by pressing on it with a broom or yardstick, toward the valve.

Draining follows a similar procedure: attach the hose to the faucet and the bed, then run the water until the hose is filled. Remove the hose from the faucet and place that end on the ground or a sink, tub, etc. Make sure that the output end of the hose is lower than the bed, and gravity will do all the work. You can go and do other things while waiting, to come back to an empty water bed.

It is only in cases where this is not possible, or if a faster drain is desired, that waterbed drains are used. Beds in basements, for instance, might be difficult to drain without using a pump. And pumps will be able to drain the mattress much faster than just siphoning the water away naturally using gravity.

6 Best Single Beds With Mattress

Our children's best interest must be our top priority. The good sleep for 8-9 hours per night is very important for the general health of children. Children that don't have this rest, in long term, their memory and their capacity to comprehend are affected. All parents should keep in mind the importance of a good bed for that their children would benefit of a good and peaceful rest during the night. Single beds with mattress are in fact the most popular among parents that pick beds to furnish their children's bedroom.

    Bed Frame Rails

Single beds with mattress come in a large variety of attractive designs. A simple search on the Internet will come out with thousands of results for single beds that fit perfectly in any children bedroom. Of course, in accordance with the large offer, the prices for these beds go from cheap to luxurious, this way parents would have a wide range of choices.

    Bed Frame Rails

When you pick a bed for your children's bedroom, you should measure the room first so that the bed doesn't take much from the entire surface of the room. This is why single beds with mattress are a suitable and practical choice.

There are many different models that would suit your child's bedroom. In terms of practicability and even more so if you have two children that can share the same bedroom, bunk beds are the best choice you could make. There are many appealing designs made of wood with a light and soft color of paint finishes or simple metal ones with safety ladders and rails so you would know your child safe at night.

Children's fashion is in a continuous change. These days, kids love the themed beds. For boys the racings cars beds for which their bed frame comes in different shapes and colors, and for girls princess beds with high foot end both on headboard and footboard to give the appearance of a princess's throne.

Divan single beds are very roomy and comfortable and many of them come with useful storage space underneath. Such a bed is suitable for bedrooms that are not necessarily for children. For smaller bedrooms these divans are very good and have the great advantage of the under bed storage place.

For guests rooms or even for teenager rooms that can be used as guests rooms too, the single beds that come with trundle beds underneath are the top choice among customers. These trundle beds, if needed can be lifted up and be at the same height as the bed. When they are not needed they can be tucked away under the bed, this way saving space in the room.

One of the best designs of single beds is the adjustable single bed. This kind of bed is like a God sent for the older persons with certain medical condition and for those that have back or neck problems, or for those who just want to read or watch TV in a more comfortable position without the "help" of a couple of pillows more under their head.

How to Choose an Adjustable Bed

Deciding to get an adjustable bed is only the beginning; the main task of choosing one is arduous if the buyer is not well versed with what is available in the market. The first thing to understand before checking out the numerous beds is the requirement or need.

    Bed Frame Rails

Depending on the ailment of the person who is going to use the adjustable bed, there are several varieties to choose from. What exactly is one looking for can be understood better by going through the various options available.
Height adjustment is known as the HI/Lo option. This raises and lowers the mattress height assisting in getting out of bed easily or transferring to and from the wheelchair, making the bed and minimizing the risk of injury.

    Bed Frame Rails

Head elevation option raises the head of the bed, thus supporting the back and head. This option aids in sitting up in bed with support, getting out of bed, and changing to different positions.

Leg elevation option can be used for elevation of the lower legs and this feature is helpful for people with edema, phlebitis, circulation problems, or for fluid drainage.

There is another wonderful feature available in these adjustable beds and that is knee break. This is also another leg elevation option but one that is used to support the thighs at a certain angle and keeps the lower legs elevated parallel to the mattress.
Choose the style you wish to use, from the numerous styles available. There are the typical hospital type adjustable beds with normal metallic frames and also the more fashionable looking beds available for home use. These look less clinical and people who do not like hospitals will do well to get one of these.

The benefit of the hospital type beds is that they are very useful when bed rails are needed or a hoist is required for regular transfers from the bed. There are also some that have the option of a headboard and footboard, giving them less of a hospital look and feel.

Bed Rails For Race Car Beds

Ever since the screening of the Disney Pixar animation, Cars, race car beds have been rising in popularity. Children love them because they want to be driving their own sport cars. They are the perfect playground for imagination kids. Parents love these beds too; children no longer need heavy coaxing to go to sleep, the kids sleep better, have less nightmares and all these means better quality sleep for parents as well.

    Bed Frame Rails

Most race car beds boast of a sporty shaped body, but on the inside it is, after all, still a bed. Car beds body frames, like the real McCoys, are fairly low in height. Usually, the mattress is almost levelled with the sides of the frame, leaving little or no bed sides to keep children from falling over. Some parents suggests removing the box spring to lower the sleeping area such that the sides become raised instead.

    Bed Frame Rails

Other concerned parents have turned to installing bed rails on these beds to prevent their children from injuring themselves. However, this is often met with resistance from their children because rails break the overall design of the bed. Luckily, not all rails are incompatible with these sporty beds. In fact, most rails can be made to become race car bed friendly with some modifications.

The easiest way to fit bed rails with the car beds is to paint it the same color scheme. It can be as simple as a monochrome or if you're comfortable with colors, you can mix and match shades of colors to enhance the sporty effect.

Bed rails also needn't be rectangular and straight. While most bed rails are of standard sizes, bed rails, especially those from your race car bed manufacturer are usually already customized with smooth curves to blend into the race car frame.

Some of these bed rails are designed like wings of a sports car so they make the bed look even more stylish and at the same time, they are firm and sturdy enough to provide support to your child in his sleep.

Now you can have a race car bed for your child and you don't have to worry about your kids falling off the bed side with bed rails for your childrens beds.
