Dorm Decorating Ideas

How to keep organized and stylish in a small space.

Bed Frame Rails

Moving into a dorm and trying to figure out where you will put everything? Are you wondering how you can give such a small space plenty of style? Here are plenty of ideas for storage and style, especially if you are a college student on a budget.

Bed Frame Rails

The most important thing about living in a dorm is keeping organized. Since you may be sharing a dorm with a room mate, it will be important to keep your things separated and in places where they are easy to locate. Plus, you will want to respect the fact that it is their space too, and will want to keep it free of clutter. (Lets just hope your room mate keeps that in mind as well!) College life is quite an adjustment, and having a cluttered space will make it hard to concentrate, and could make you late if you are spending your time frantically searching for things that you need.

Here are some organization ideas;

Closet organizing- As small as this space is, be smart about utilizing all the space that you possibly can. Use closet organizing systems which hang up, and have separated spaces for storage. Some systems have a place for hanging your clothes, and shelves, shoe racks, or totes for added storage.

The space under your bed- Using this space can provide a lot of storage. Using totes, plastic bins with lids, or storage that is specifically designed for storing shoes under your bed. Also, a great idea for added space under your bed are bed lifts. These are blocks that go under each leg of your bed and keep them in place securely. They will raise your bed so that you can put larger items underneath. Having this extra space would really be nice for stackable storage.

The walls- Since the space is limited by the dimensions of the room, use the space that you have on the walls! Adding shelves, cubes, or CD racks which hang securely to the wall, will really provide much needed space for CD's, books, or photos. Also, a cork board or calender is nice for reminders or photos. Use photo frames with hooks and a shelf for added storage, and a place for your keys.

Study space- The study space is a very important area to keep organized. Most likely, you will have a small desk. Try having stackable storage underneath the desk, (leaving room for the chair to be tucked in) to keep papers, various computer supplies, or office supplies. Remember, again, use the wall! The space on the wall above the desk can be used to hang cubes or shelves.

Of course it isn't just about organization, but also style! Many types of bedding come in bags which include all the pieces that you will need. Once you choose the colors or patterns that you will want for your room, you can add throw pillows or window treatments to coordinate. Also, using a bed skirt is a great idea to hide the extra storage area underneath your bed.

One thing to keep in mind when you decorate your dorm, is to include things that add personal touches that remind you of home. Since your dorm is really your home away from home, try placing pictures with decorative frames on the wall, or wall decals with a favorite inspirational quote. If you find that you are running out of room for all of your photos, a digital photo frame is a great way to have many photos in one place. Try adding a cork board to pin up other memorabilia such as cards, photos, or messages.

Try to find a nice rug that will coordinate with your decor to add color and style. This will also provide a warm comfortable area to walk on.

Even if your space is small, there are many ways to add space and style! Using these tips will help eliminate clutter and give you a space with your own style. The last thing you need is a cluttered space that is too overwhelming to keep your concentration, and make you late for class because you are too busy searching your room for the things you need to start your day. Surround yourself with memories of home too so that you can have familiar things around to make yourself comfortable!

Bunk Bed Ladders For Bunk Beds

Who does not get taken back to a time of fun and innocence, when they think of bunk beds? Whether you slept in one at camp, in a dorm room, or at home when you were a child, these beds bring back many memories.

Bed Frame Rails

Bunk beds are comprised of two beds stacked one on top of another, allowing two people to sleep in the same room with more space. The most common use is in childrens rooms, on ships, in army barracks, in dorm rooms, in summer camp cabins, and in hostels. Bunk bed ladders are a necessity for getting in and out of the top bunk.

Bed Frame Rails

These specialty ladders are located on the side of the bed near the bottom of the bed, inserted into an opening between a safety rail that runs the length of the bed. Some use built in ladders or hook on ladders.

There are a variety of styles with standard options have two twin bed mattresses that are stacked in the same direction while the Twin Over Full bunk beds have a full size mattress on the bottom and a twin sized mattress on the top. A Futon is similar in appearance to the twin bunk, but the bottom bunk can fold up and into a futon couch when not being used as a bed. These work well in a studio apartment. An L-Shaped version is comprised of twin sized mattresses stacked on top of each other, but the bottom bunk is at a right angle to the top bunk at the bottom half of the top. This adds space under the top half of the top bunk where it can be used for a desk or chair. A Loft Bed is another option, but there is no bottom bunk. These are used a lot in dorm rooms and a desk can be put under it, saving space. All styles of bunks, including the Loft uses bunk bed ladders to get to the top bunk.

Most bunk ladders are made out of wood or iron to match the frame. There are usually 4 steps with an opening at the top. A sturdy ladder is important for safety reasons, especially with children.

Black Metal Futon Frames - Giving Futons a Bad Name

Having worked in furniture for many years I have always believed strongly in that you get what you pay for or that the value of what you're buying is in direct relation to the quality of the product and the price placed on those goods or services. I also believe that some products are capable of giving an entire line of furniture a bad name due to their specific lack of quality and unjustly so because one type of product doesn't represent the qualities of an entire line of furniture. No better example of this can be said than what black metal futon frames have done against the futon industry in the last 10 years. In this article I'll explain my position about the negative aspects these metal frames provide and why it would be best for consumers and retailers alike to move away from these frames that are giving the industry a bad name.

Bed Frame Rails

Futons as a category were born almost 25 years ago in the form of wood frames. These frames were simple and offered conversion from a sofa to bed by operation of the frame. Wood frame designs advanced much over the years and eventually led to wood futon frames that looked like conventional furniture. Many of these pieces of furniture borrowed from real world furniture construction techniques in the form of doweled construction, French dovetail joints and steel on steel hardware connections offering greater quality and flexibility in design and quality. The workmanship of these frames can easily be seen in the higher end models offered today and justifies the retail pricing you see for these pieces as being of the highest quality available in this category of furniture.

Bed Frame Rails

The problems that exist in the futon industry however result from specific manufacturers wanting to take a low end, low price approach to building products that can be retailed in the big box stores at the lowest price possible. Metal futon frames have long been a staple of being "the" mass merchant offering in futons as a category. Unfortunately many consumers purchase these frames as an introduction to the futon category of furniture and were quite disappointed by the quality and construction of these made to hit a price point futons. The problems of metal frames reside in several design issues.

Metal futon frames are constructed from hollow metal tubes. The arms are hollow and pocket welds are welded onto these arms with which to attach stretcher rails. Steel hinges are attached to the inside of the arms and hollow metal seat and back racks are connected to the hinges using regular screws. The problems start in the seat section. The hollow tubes and spot welded bars that make up the foundation of the seat section are prone to breaking loose off of the seat section. The spot welding is not sufficient enough to keep these bars from breaking loose and are a result of the low cost approach of building these decks. Another issue that results from the hollow tube of the seat section is that it is prone to bending from normal use. The hinges that are attached to the arms suffer the same fate as over time customers have brought these in to stores showing them bent out.

This isn't just an issue with one manufacturer in particular. We've seen this from 4 different metal futon frame manufacturers offering these frames. There is just not enough materials or quality of construction to justify these frames as a viable furniture solution for consumers. It should also make people question purchasing one of these frames when they only carry a 30-90 day warranty. Any manufacturer who warranties a piece of furniture for this amount of time doesn't expect it to last very long and neither should you as the consumer. 98% of our futon related service issues over a 10 year period resulted from failures with black metal frames. Often within the first year of ownership.

Why then you ask do futon retailers continue to show these on their showroom floors if they know they are a substandard offering? An interesting question. Futon retailers are often specialty stores that provide a dozen or more futon frames. Be it an online store a physical brick and mortar store. The majority of frames you'll see are made of wood and are offered with various arm designs and usually a half a dozen or more mattress options. Hundreds of upholstered and fabric covers exist for covering the mattresses of these frames. These retailers are serious about offering consumers everything available in the world of futons. Sometimes they take this quite literally. I would expect that it was the same reason our store carried them. We wanted to show everything available and didn't want mass merchants showing the product and have a customer walk in wanting one and not being able to get it.

Our store stopped carrying black metal frames a few years ago for many of the reasons listed above. We decided to shift away from low end products and concentrate on proven well made, quality higher end products. So many people walk through our furniture store and when offered a futon frame as a possible piece of furniture for their home are told by the customer, "I bought one of those years ago at [insert mass merchant name here] and it was the most uncomfortable frame. It just didn't last very long." The experience of owning a black metal frame has turned off a large majority of consumers who would have found happiness and delight in owning solid wood frames made to last. It's really a shame as futons offer great flexibility in being both sofas and sleepers.

Having worked in retail and having worked in furniture stores carrying futons. I can honestly say that as a retailer it is very frustrating to know that stores still carry low end black metal frames. My intentions in this article are not to be harsh but I really hope retailers figure out that low end products made to hit a particular price point are not doing consumers or themselves any great service. Consumers deserve quality well made products at reasonable prices based on the materials and labor that went into that product. When this doesn't happen expectations aren't met. Disappointment and dissatisfaction soon follow and the consumer is left with a negative feeling towards the product. The intent of this article was to bring forth the experiences I've had with this product line not only from having retailed it but from what customers have shared with me about these products. I feel strongly that black metal futon frames should be avoided by both retailers and consumers alike. If you've had a negative experience with these frames I would encourage you to not judge the entire futon industry by these particular products. If you're a consumer I encourage you to shop a futon retailer or futon specialty store and discover the "real" world of futons and what they have to offer for both you and your home.

Modern Kids Bunk Beds - A Shopping Guide

Bringing home a newborn is a wonderful experience. If your baby has just arrived, though, you will need to make some living arrangements and invest in some new kids bedroom furniture. You may have to move your older children from their current bed frames into more appropriate beds, perhaps even into a new room, so you will be able to provide plenty of space for the newest addition to your little family.

Bed Frame Rails

Space tends to be a big issue in modern family abodes. Convincing your children to share a room is a great way to save space and give your kids a fun environment to sleep in. For sucha situation, you should consider investing in some quality contemporary bunk bed furniture to address these concerns.

Bed Frame Rails

Kids bunk beds have always been popular due to their space saving capabilities. But they are lots of fun and come in exciting designs, too! There's a wide range of kids beds on the market that vary drastically in shape, style, size, and features or accessories.

But as great as these beds are, your child's safety should always come first. Take into account that there are many varieties of bunk beds on the market, from some less reputable manufacturers, or manufacturers who are subject to lax regulations, that have features that could seriously compromise your child's safety.

It's generally understood that kids are more likely to fall and injure themselves from playing around on their bunk bed furniture than, say, a platform bed. This is a common thing, and usually ends up with little more than a bump or bruise. However, try to remember that a single fall could also result in serious injuries. Children love to jump and play on their beds, so these incidents tend to happen especially when their bunk beds are high and structurally weak.

So bunk beds, while efficient and lots of fun, can be dangerous if you don't choose wisely, and take the necessary precautions to ensure child safety. If a bunk or kids loft bed is the only option you have to save enough space, the guidelines written below could help you select the best bunk bed for your kids.

A kids bed should be sturdy and built to last a lifetime. An in-store test is a good idea, if possible, so you can ensure that your kids bed choice can support the weight of your children. What you can do to start the test is to place your foot against the footboard of the lower bunk and then try to pull the whole bed towards you. You shouldn't be able to raise the bed posts from the ground, unless of course you are an especially stronger-than-average person.

It's also a good idea to pick out the lowest-profile kids bed bunk available. In other words, pick one that is not too tall - the shorter the better. Always consider that the lower the bunk is, the lower the risk of your kids getting into falling-related accidents. According to typical safety rules, the recommended bunk height is 1550 mm to the top of the upper mattress. This height is fair enough to keep your children from getting severely hurt if they accidentally fall from the bed.

It is crucial that the bunk bed furniture design you select has no "hanging points," i.e., places where clothes and cords can get snagged. Also, there shouldn't be any gaps or holes that could trap your child's head, legs or arms. Unless it is bolted firmly to a wall, the bunk bed should have guardrails on both the wall side as well as the side facing the open room. Guard rails are the most important accessories for bunk beds; they prevent the child from slipping down gaps, trapping their heads, or falling from the bed while sleeping.

It is also important to make sure that the release mechanism of the guardrails is strong enough that it won't come unlatched easily. Kids are curious and may try to play with it, and you don't want the guardrail safety latch coming undone by accident. Also check the mattress height indicator when selecting the mattress for your children; a mattress that is too thick and tall can reduce the effectiveness of the safety rails.

If you don't want to put your children on elevated beds but space is still at a premium in your family's home, trundle beds are a safer option. These beds are, like bunk beds, big-time space savers and they are often guaranteed for durability. Some models feature sliding mattresses that come out from under the upper mattress; perfect for guests and sleepovers, or for two siblings to share a room. The lower bed can slide back in after use.

If you really must have bunk beds for your children's room, make sure that you place your child under nine years old at the bottom bunk, as it has been found out that children under this age have particularly high rate of injury in bunk beds. After the age of 12, bunk-related injuries decline sharply.

In order to achieve a space-efficient but fun and comfortable environment for their kids, parents often choose to invest in kids beds that are organized space savers, such as kids bunk beds or cool new trundle beds. However, as safety is also an important feature, it is necessary for parents to double check their bed choice so that they can reduce bed-related accidents. With a little savvy and smart shopping, you can find the perfect trundle, loft, or bunk bed for your kids.

Wooden Bed Frames

Most wooden bed frames are on legs and not casters or wheels and are often higher than metal ones. Storage space is also included in some wooden bed frames with drawers under the bed either built in or removable. Some styles have beautifully carved posts at the corners for added decoration. Simple platform beds are low to the ground and can support either a futon or box spring. There are also four-poster wooden frames and sleigh beds with an outward curl on the tip of each end. The beautiful cherry, merlot, maple, rustic pine, antique white or oak finishes make inexpensive beds look rich and elegant.

Bed Frame Rails

The styles range from the simple classical to contemporary and modern and come in stacking beds for children's rooms to large platform beds in elegant styles. White painted wooden frames have been fashionable for decades and are just as popular today. Some have headboards and foot ends in styles such as Old English, Shaker and some only have headboards. Platform beds come in many different styles including Windsor platform, Manhattan platform and Murray platform. There are Captain's style with bookcase headboards and high sides which are great for children. They also include cribs and day beds.

Bed Frame Rails

Wooden bed frames can be costly but will last for years and can be used for generations. There are also veneers of hardwoods over less expensive wood that give the same impression as a solid frame. In the long run it is a good investment. A good quality child's bed can be later moved to a guest room. The costs have been greatly reduced lately because of the availability of sustainable wood from around the world. The sizes include double, twin, queen, king and California king and have headboards footboards, slats to support the mattress and side rails if needed. There are headboards that have inset faux or genuine leather as a style statement.

Facts About Bed Frames

Nearly every type of mattress uses some kind of bed frame. Bed frames, also referred to as bed steads, serve the function of keeping the mattress elevated and, consequently, away from dirt and any insects or rodents that may bother the sleeper. An elevated mattress also allows for better air circulation to keep the sleeper more comfortable.

Bed Frame Rails

Bed frames are often constructed of wood or metal rails. Larger frames, such as those designed for king and queen sized mattresses, typically also include a center beam for added support. In addition, slats are typically placed and secured perpendicular to the side rails to ensure proper structural integrity and strength. The frame is designed to create a box for the mattress or box spring to securely lay in. Bed frames generally are one of three main types.

Bed Frame Rails

Platform. These are often used without a box spring.

Captain. This type features drawers under the frame to create usable space between the floor and frame.

Waterbed. This is a heavy-duty frame constructed specifically to support the extreme weight of the water that is held inside the mattress or water chamber.

Even though they technically are not aspects or parts of a bed frame, many people often include headboards, footboards and bed rails in their definition of what bed frames are. Headboards and footboards are typically constructed of wood or metal, and their size, weight and price can vary considerably. In addition, they can be stained, painted or covered in a variety of synthetic or natural materials.
