Nearly every type of mattress uses some kind of bed frame. Bed frames, also referred to as bed steads, serve the function of keeping the mattress elevated and, consequently, away from dirt and any insects or rodents that may bother the sleeper. An elevated mattress also allows for better air circulation to keep the sleeper more comfortable.
Bed frames are often constructed of wood or metal rails. Larger frames, such as those designed for king and queen sized mattresses, typically also include a center beam for added support. In addition, slats are typically placed and secured perpendicular to the side rails to ensure proper structural integrity and strength. The frame is designed to create a box for the mattress or box spring to securely lay in. Bed frames generally are one of three main types.
Bed Frame Rails
Platform. These are often used without a box spring.
Captain. This type features drawers under the frame to create usable space between the floor and frame.
Waterbed. This is a heavy-duty frame constructed specifically to support the extreme weight of the water that is held inside the mattress or water chamber.
Even though they technically are not aspects or parts of a bed frame, many people often include headboards, footboards and bed rails in their definition of what bed frames are. Headboards and footboards are typically constructed of wood or metal, and their size, weight and price can vary considerably. In addition, they can be stained, painted or covered in a variety of synthetic or natural materials.
